Rich in its own history, as well as the history of the land surrounding it, Howard University is always a fan favorite to visit when in the District. Founded in 1867, the university is the alma mater of such notable names as famed actresses (and real life sisters) Phylicia Rashad and Debbie Allen, David Dinkins (first African American mayor of New York City), and Shirley Franklin and Sharon Pratt Kelly, the first female mayors of Atlanta and Washington DC, respectively. Home to five of the nine historically black fraternities and sororities, the campus boasts fun and flashy Greek plots for affiliated members to frequent, while covering the campus in a rich reverence and humbling history that one can only find among the hallowed halls on the hilltop high.

—-

Home to what some can honestly argue is the most famous address in the world, Washington DC certainly takes the cake when it comes to satisfying visitors’ appetites for seeing the sites. A city filled to the brim with stories of a nation’s most basic of beginnings, the “District” preserves the legacies and carries out the dreams of some of the greatest minds and institutions to ever grace this land. That being said, while forever holding true to the lyrics ever-patriotic This Land Is Your Land, Washington DC is a place that was made for you and me, and its treasures are ours to discover…

Bugs Bunny- The job of any trickster, but especially the American type, is to think the thoughts and do the things that they say can’t be thought or done. He’s most likely to be found disturbing the complacency of his culture, or deflating the pompousness of its symbols. His influence on modern American culture, like that of all the Loony Tunes characters, has been far-reaching to the point of ubiquity. For obvious reasons, though, Bugs is the especial favorite, especially in the theatrical years, getting more shorts stories than any of his co-stars, with a very impressive 168 titles under his belt.

Sponge Bob Square Pants- From those awkward first steps, to the classic moments we’ll remember forever, to the feature length movie that solidified SpongeBob as a worldwide phenomenon. Let’s not forget, however, the impact that this show has had on us, the viewer. From kids to adults, Sponge Bob Square Pants brightens the day of anyone who watches his amusing misadventures (well, most people anyway, but that’s another story). Just to think, he’s done all of this while living in a pineapple under the sea.

Sonic The Hedge Hog- “The Most Famous Hedgehog In The World,” is the flagship character for home and arcade game (and former game console) maker Sega. Designed to compete with Nintendo’s mascot Mario, the two companies went head to head for over a decade, until Sega pulled out of the home console market.

Sega has made numerous video games starring Sonic since his debut in 1991, spanning five generations of console manufacturing. Through numerous aggressive ad campaigns (the most famous being the touting of “Blast Processing,” described as being able to render sprites at extreme speeds but actually referring to the CPU’s clock rate), Sonic soon became one of the most recognizable fictional characters in the world, even beating out Mickey Mouse for a time. While his glory days may be behind him, Sonic is still a significant part of gaming, and it cannot be denied that he forever changed the gaming landscape.

Goku- Goku’s journey and ever-growing strength resulted in the character winning “the admiration of young boys everywhere.” We see his struggles and can’t help but relate to him. Goku was ranked Number One in IGN’s Top 25 Anime Characters of All Time, and in Mania Entertainment’s 10 Most Iconic Anime Heroes written by Thomas Zoth who commented that “Goku and Dragon Ball completely revolutionized the shonen genre.” In a Newtype poll from March 2010, Goku was voted the fourth most popular male character from the 1980s.

Bart Simpson- Bart became the most prevalent Simpsons character on memorabilia, such as T-shirts. Bart was described as “television’s king of 1990″,”television’s brightest new star” and an “undiminished smash”.Entertainment Weekly named Bart the “entertainer of the year” for 1990, writing that “Bart has proved to be a rebel who’s also a good kid, a terror who’s easily terrorized, and a flake who astonishes us, and himself, with serious displays of fortitude.”In the United States congressional, senatorial and gubernatorial elections of 1990, Bart was one of the most popular write-in candidates, and in many areas was second only to Mickey Mouse amongst fictional characters. Now if that isn’t power I don’t know what is.
